Bensedin (also known as Diazepam) is a medicine from the group of benzodiazepines. It acts primarly to releive anxiety and fears. It also relax muscles and acts as anticonvulsant (prevents seizures). Because of these effects, it is used to treat anxiety (fear, anxiety), muscle cramps (spasms) as well as for epileptic seizures treatment especially to treat condition know as “status epileptucus”. It can also be used for delirium tremens treatment and for preparing for surgery. This medicine is also used to treat insomnia.


The unpleasant emotional state consisting of psychophysiological responses to anticipation of unreal or imagined danger, ostensibly resulting from unrecognized intrapsychic conflict.

Physiological concomitants include increased heart rate, altered respiration rate, sweating, trembling, weakness and fatigue, psychological concomitants include feelings of impending danger, powerlessness, apprehension, and tension.

Many different types of medications are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including traditional anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines, and newer options like antidepressants and beta-blockers.

  1. short-term relief of severe anxiety (an emotional state where you may sweat, tremble, feel anxious and have a fast heartbeat); this may occur alone or with difficulty in sleeping or mental health problems

  2. severe insomnia (difficulty sleeping)

  3. muscle spasms due to cerebral palsy or tetanus

  4. symptoms of alcohol withdrawal

  5. with other medicines to treat epilepsy (fits) or for convulsions caused by fever or poisoning

helping patients relax before surgery or dental procedures.

This medicine can also be used for children to treat night terrors (where they wake up screaming, crying and very upset), sleepwalking, to help them relax before surgery, to control muscle spasms/twitching as in tetanus and controlling tension and irritability in cerebral spasticity.


To achieve anxiolytic effect, the lowest effective dose should be given; Treatment should not last longer than 4 weeks and the medicine should be gradually withdrawn from the therapy. In patients with long-term treatment with benzodiazepines, a longer withdrawal period may be required from the therapy. Long-term chronic drug use is not recommended.


Anxiety states, obsessive-compulsive neurosis, and other psychiatric disorders: 5 mg-30 mg daily in divided doses.

Insomnia coupled with anxiety: 5 mg – 15 mg before bedtime. Cerebral palsy: 5 mg – 60 mg daily in divided doses.

Upper motor neuron spasticity: 5 mg – 60 mg daily in divided doses.

Muscular spasm of different etiology, fibrositis, cervical spondylitis: 5 mg – 15 mg daily in divided doses. Additional therapy for certain types of epilepsy: 2 mg – 60 mg daily in divided doses.

Alcohol Abstinence: 5 mg – 20 mg, repeat if necessary in 2 to 4 hours.

Oral premedication for dental interventions: 5 mg overnight interventions, 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg two hours prior to intervention.

Oral premedication prior to surgery: 5 mg – 20 mg.


It is recommended to use alternative pharmaceutical forms in children, to facilitate the administration of doses of less than 5 mg.

Spasticity in children with minimal brain damage: 5 mg – 40 mg daily in divided doses. Oral premedication prior to surgery : 2 mg – 10 mg.

Elderly and exhausted patients

Doses should be halved compared to those recommended in the text above.

Damaged kidney and liver function

The use of diazepam in patients with hepatic insufficiency can lead to coma, therefore it is necessary to reduce the dose or to consider the use of another drug. In patients with severe renal insufficiency, a dose should also be reduced.

Dose should always be reduced in children and the elderly patients, because of stronger effect of Diazepam.

Therapy should always be started with lower doses. The dose may be gradually increased until the desired effect is achieved.

Bensedin exists in the form of tablets and injections. It can be mixed with normal saline (0.9% NaCl) and administered in the form of a slow intravenous infusion (for at least 4 hours).

If you are using this medication to treat insomnia, you should take Bensedin in the evening, an hour before bedtime.

Bensedin should not be used longer than 3 months because it can cause physical and psychological dependence (Bensedin addiction)!


Bensedin can cause the following side effects:

  1. anterograde amnesia (loss of memory while you were under the influence of Diazepam),

  2. headache,

  3. insomnia,

  4. agitation,

  5. anger,

  6. aggression,

  7. impotence,

  8. gynecomastia (breast enlargement),

  9. blurred vision,

  10. drowsiness,

  11. fatigue,

  12. nausea,

  13. vomiting,

  14. constipation,

  15. ataxia (presence of abnormal movements),

  16. diplopia (double vision),

  17. speech disorder,

  18. nightmares,

  19. low blood pressure,

allergy and others.
